The First Intelligent Mobile Hotspot

Inter Communications will launch the MiFi 2372 Intelligent Mobile Hotspot from Novatel Wireless. It’s an impressive device that provides a cloud of internet coverage using a 3G connection with a SIM card from Inter Communications.

“Inter Communications is dedicated to bringing the industry’s most innovative solutions to users as they travel across Japan, and around the world, to over 132 countries and overseas regions,” said Mr. Seiji Nishimura, president and CEO, Inter Communications. “We are delighted to deliver the unprecedented functionality and access of the Novatel Wireless MiFi 2372. Our customers will be able to utilize the multiple frequencies of the MiFi 2372 to roam globally, while paying local rates with our Global Data service package for connectivity with all of their devices.”

The MiFi 2372 is the first intelligent mobile hotspot that allows users to put the internet in their hand. It creates a personal cloud of high-speed Internet connectivity that can be easily shared with up to five Wi-Fi devices. The MiFi 2372 works on the 800MHz, 1900MHz and 2100MHz band for local service in Japan.

The MiFi 2372 provides users with download speeds of up to 7.2 megabits per second. The device includes a microSD slot for expandable memory of up to 16 gigabytes. The device won the “Best of Innovations” award in the “Enabling Technologies” category at the CES 2010 in Las Vegas earlier this year.

“The Novatel Wireless MiFi 2372 not only provides customers with cutting edge mobile connectivity, it also has on-board GPS and storage capabilities delivering the option of running a variety of location-based applications and store personal content,” said Rob Hadley, CMO, Novatel Wireless. “We’re excited to be partnering with Inter Communications to provide reliable, ultra high-speed wireless Internet solutions for our combined customers across Japan.”

The Novatel MiFi 2372 comes unlocked from Quantum-Wireless.com. Quantum has a complete selection of MiFis, including the European version, the MiFi 2352 and the MiFi 2200, Verizon edition. The European model is the Novatel Mifi 2352.

I’ll be travelling and plan to use my mifi in Japan. The specs suggest all mifis are compatible with both the Canadian and Japanese networks (though I haven’t explicitly seen this written anywhere) so I’m figuring that all I’d need to do is get a data SIM plan from either a Japanese carrier (which seems like it’s quite a pain) or a nearby foreign carrier with Japanese plans (such as http://www.telestial.com/data.php) but these all look like packaged roaming charges and far too expensive to be worth it.

Anyone got holiday data-plan experience in Japan want to impart wisdom to a mifi traveller?

I would recommend going with a Japanese carrier. A few things to keep in mind:
1. Although all Mifis may work everywhere, their 3G capability is not as flexible. In Japan Docomo and Softbank will work with the mifi2352 http://www.quantum-wireless.com/store/index.php/novatel-mifitm-2352-intelligent-mobile-hotspot-for-hspa-networks.html
2. Canadian carriers vary in what frequencies they use. Bell, Rogers and Telus will work with the mifi2372. For other carriers you would have to check.
Feel free to ask us about any specific carrier you have in mind and we’ll do our best to get you an answer.
